Original Provenance: Erie County, New York
Blue-Purple flowers and glossy heart shaped leaves that emerge directly from underground rhizomes. The three lower petals are somewhat hairy and turn white at the “throat”. They can aggressively self-seed and become weedy in ideal growing conditions. Caterpillars of several types of Fritillary butterflies feed on the foliage.
**Note: Viola odorata looks similar but is native to Europe and has become naturalized in North America. How to identify the European Violet: Spreads via stolons (like strawberry plants), has a sweet fragrant smell, and the orange anther is hook shaped.
