Locally Sourced from 8.1 Ecoregion

A popular late season aster that provides nectar before winter, especially to Monarchs. Bunches of flowers can range in color from purple, violet, lavender and sometimes shades of pink. To promote a bushier rather than tall structure, prune back by half early in the season. This form of pruning is often called the “chelsea chop”. Bottom lower leaves may dry up when the plant blooms, and is normal. Thegenus Symphyotrichum serve as host plants to dozens of moths including the Wavy-Lined Emerald, Pearl Crescent, and the Gorgone Checkerspot butterfly.
